Event Overview

The NSW Championships brings together navigators, endurance athletes, and adventure seekers for a weekend of strategy, exploration, and competition in the stunning wilderness of Mt Werong. Whether you’re aiming for a championship title, a personal challenge, or simply an unforgettable experience in the great outdoors, this event has something for everyone.

The area in the western Blue Mountains and Southern Tablelands is considered to be some of the best rogaining country in the world – light bushland, few tracks, clear topographical features without being too steep and rugged, and the Mt Werong area is the epitome of that. The coursesetters also report an array of fungi and fresh banksia to admire, plus a range of navigational challenges, including a few twists!

With 8-hour and 24-hour course options, your team will be charting your own path across rugged terrain, seeking out checkpoints, testing your navigation skills, and making strategic decisions under pressure. Whether you’re a seasoned rogainer or a newcomer looking for an exhilarating test of endurance, this is the event that defines rogaining in 2025.

This year’s festival promises:
✅ Championship racing – compete for titles regardless of how long you’re out on course.
✅ Scenic and challenging terrain – navigate through the vast landscapes of Mt Werong.
✅ Community and camaraderie – meet fellow adventurers, share stories, and take part in a sport that thrives on teamwork.
✅ Unparalleled strategy and endurance tests- your choices, your map, your mission.

NSW Championship

The NSW Rogaining Championships is the premier event in the NSW rogaining calendar, encouraging the best rogainers from NSW and interstate to compete in the pinnacle of endurance, strategy, and teamwork. The event includes multiple categories from Youth to Ultra Veterans, ensuring inclusivity across age groups and experience levels.

Championship titles are decided in the 24-hour event. A championship rogaine is a special event which allows participants to fully embrace the traditional rogaining experience, as all of the early rogaines were 24-hours in length, and it was only later that shorter events became more commonplace. 24-hour rogaines test a team’s endurance, concentration and teamwork, and prove to be incredibly rewarding.

We encourage teams to sign up for the 24-hour event. Teams are not required to stay out for the entire duration, and can return to the Hash House at any point to eat and rest while still qualifying for the championship regardless of their total time on the course.

Australian Intervarsity Rogaining Championship

This year the NSW Championships incorporates the Australian Intervarsity Rogaining Championship, which runs concurrently and highlights the best varsity teams from across the country.

Teams compete to win the perpetual Nigel Aylott trophy, which was established by the Nigel Aylott Memorial Sports Foundation in honour of Nigel,  a talented rogainer and adventure racer. He won the World Rogaining Championships in 1998 and the Australian Rogaining Championships in 2000 and 2001, before his tragic death during the 2004 Primal Quest race. This trophy celebrates the role University outdoor sports clubs had in introducing Nigel to rogaining.

To be eligible for the intervarsity championship, all team members must be students enrolled at the same tertiary education institution, with that institution recognised by UniSport Australia. There is no age restriction, permitting under-graduate, post-graduate and mature student to compete.

Travel bursaries, sponsored by the Nigel Aylott Memorial Sports Foundation, are available to cover the travel costs of one team from each state/territory to compete at the Intervarsity Rogaining Championships. Entrants should contact their state rogaining association as soon as possible for details about their selection process for the state representative team.

Interested NSW applicants should email the NSWRA at info@nswroganing.org. Selection will be based on rogaining experience and standing, with preference given to undergraduate full-time students.

Further details about the Australian Intervarsity Rogaining Championships are provided by the Australian Rogaining Association.

What is Rogaining?

A fun team sport, navigating using map, compass and clues to visit as many checkpoints as possible within the time limit. It’s a “choose your own adventure” experience in outdoor environments where teams explore the course for as much or as little of the allocated time as they like.

Our sport is for all ages and fitness levels, from families walking with small children through to bushwalkers and runners. Rogaining encourages the development of strategy and navigational skills, fitness, and the ability to work in a team.
