Lane Cove Rivergaine VI
Results & wrap up

There were almost 500 participants in 200 teams at the LaneCoveRivergaine VI last Sunday. It was the highest attendance since the first of this series of uniquely mischievous rogaines began in 2015, and this one was arguably the best yet.

Congratulations to all participants in this year's LaneCoveRivergaine VI. It was a great way to cap off the 2024 rogaining year. The weather was warm and sunny with a sea breeze in the afternoon, making it an ideal day for taking in the course's spectacular harbour and beach scenery. The Hash House was located in the grounds of the historic St Paul's College overlooking the harbour on the edge of North Head.

Participants were treated to icy poles and watermellon as they returned, and later were offered a selection of tasty middle eastern-style sausages and wraps, along with a selection of desserts before the presentations.

The rivergaines are renowned for their quirky twists. This year was no different with a croquet game to be played before anyone could bag the top scoring control (120 points), and a bonus happy hour of double points was on offer for controls visited in the afternoon. The points bonuses were well taken advantage of to magnify many team scores, including those of the winning teams.

The overall winners were "Quality Meats" (Chris Turnbull, Sammy Agnew) with a score of 3,750 points. They covered the entire course in 5 hours and 17 minutes. Second, just 10 points behind with 3,740 points, were "Armocks" (Ryan Armstrong, Glenn Horrocks) and third with 3,510 points, was "Adventure Junkies" (Serge Pikuz, Serge Kurov). These teams certainly made the most of the happy hour, as the base maximum score without double points was just 2,800 points.

The winning croquet players at Control 120 were "The Walters" (Nate Howarth, Lily Nguyen, & Ryan Darcy) who were successful with just one stroke. Special thanks to the Manly Croquet Club for hosting this unique feature of LaneCoveRivergaine VI.

The full results by category, and many more quality photos by our photographer Bruce Sutton, can be found on the website. Also, feel free to post your own favourite photos on our popular Facebook page too.

We thank our friends and sponsors, Paddy Pallin, for providing the winners' and generous lucky door prizes.

Finally, we should also like to thank the 1st North Sydney Scouts for again providing such an excellent catering menu, particularly the icy poles at the finish!

We hope everyone enjoyed the event, and thanks for coming.

March of the LaneCoveRivergaines

This event was number 6 in a series of legendary social metrogaines co-ordinated by Ted Woodley. The emphasis is on having fun so they are characterised by features that make them a little bit mischievous.

They trace the Lane Cove River from its source to the ocean. The first one began with LaneCoveRivergaine I (LCR-I) in February 2015 and extended from Pennant Hills to De Burghs Bridge in West Pymble. In 2016, LCR-II continued the journey down the river to Stringybark Creek in Lane Cove, and in 2017 LCR-III continued to Fig Tree Bridge. Then, in 2022, LCR-IV reached the Harbour Bridge, and in 2023, LCR-V covered the North Shore from the Harbour Bridge to the Spit Bridge. Finally, this year LCR-VI continued from the Spit Bridge down to Manly and on to North Head.

Here are the 6 rivergaines in numbers:

The final entry numbers for LCR-VI came in at 34 people and 22 teams more than last year, and the size of the event this year was very nearly the same as the first LCR in this series 9 years ago. While there seems to have been declining attendances from 2015 to 2017, after the enforced COVID hiatus the numbers have trended up again.

Where to next?

There are rumours Ted has plans for a LCR-VII, and more, to be revealed later. Ted is full of surprises but he's run out of 'river'! So, where to for LCR-VII? We just don't know, and maybe it's a secret, but this mysterious map was discovered blowing across the footpath outside Committee Central Headquarters in Kirribilli. Surely not an aquagaine?

We hope you'll be able to make it to LCR-VII when it happens, but you might want to bring your bathers?
