"Your Guide to Rogaining in NSW"

eNewsletter 31  -  April 2012

G'day Rogainers,

Results are now available for the Minigaine 3 Hour.

Minigaine 3 Hour : 18 March 2012

The "Madness" of the Minigaine crescendoed with over 450 people filing into Lindfield Public School to participate in the 3 hour afternoon event on a great course set by Ted Woodley. I am sure most people, like myself were very glad that the weather was kind compared to recent events, no heat and no rain!

The course had plenty of route options with a great mix of bush tracks and urban streets. Those that ventured onto the bush tracks, soon found themselves more or less muddy depending how well they danced the puddles. The final results are now up on the website, and are also on the Orienteering Summer Series results page. The Forum is running, so if you have any comments on the event, please leave a post.

ACT Rogaining Championships: 14-15th April 2012 (8 or 24 hours)

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we will not be running an Autumn rogaine this year. We encourage our members to consider the ACT Rogaine Championships. Dry eucalypt forest, clear underfoot, beautiful spurs and gullies, gentle hills and koalas that eat bark – what more could you ask for?

The area is mainly privately owned but not farmed, and has a history of gold mining. It is an easy hour and a bit drive south of Canberra. There are a few fire trails for speedier travel and controls near the Hash House will be easier navigation for beginners. Not so for controls further out!

Remember, these so-called “Championship” events are for all to enter, they are just like any other Rogaine and have just as wide a diversity of entrants. All are very welcome.

2012 Australian Rogaining Championships (South Australia) 5-6 May

Entries close soon!

Entries close on 6 April. A late fee applies after that and the absolute cut-off for entries is 20 April.

Consider this:

  • The Flinders Ranges will be absolutely beautiful in May after recent good rains.
  • The Rogaine is a great way to experience the Flinders. Basically, you just have to turn up with your personal gear.
  • Reasonably priced transport has been arranged from Adelaide and it is a safer option than driving yourself back after the event.
  • There are options for those who would like to experience the Flinders without committing to the 24 hour event.
  • There are also options for those who would like to experience the Flinders without committing to the whole 24 hour event and of course you don’t actually have to stay out for the whole 24 hours! Many experienced rogainers make full use of the hash house facilities at 24 hour events.

The Australian University Championships will be held in conjunction with this event.  Check out the photos of the event location on the website. For lovers of the Australian bush, these are an inspiration to get out there.  For more information visit the website: http://rogaine.asn.au/arc2012  or contact event organiser, Rob Tucker, on 0417 800 647

Paddy Pallin 6 Hour : 17 June 2012 (Preview)

The 49th Paddy Pallin 6 hour winter rogaine will be on Sunday, 17th June.  The event will be approximately 4 hours west of Sydney CBD. While the drive is further than usual, the route travels through some very spectacular country, perfect for rogaining, and the camping area is huge. The course will take in an area made up of predominantly rolling spurs and ridges with some areas cut by meandering creeks, honeycombed by rock outcrops, small canyons and a few waterfalls. A few springs emerge with glassy water ejected from their stony canyon floor. Marvelous views occur from high ridges that plummet to the creek or where rocky pagodas penetrate the forest canopy. Vegetation is open eucalypt forest with very little undergrowth, although some areas of cypress pine exist. Visibility will be very good and progress quicker if navigation is accurate. There are some steeper areas but most of the terrain has gentle slopes.

Watch the event website for registration details.

More 2012 Events

  • The Lake Macquarie on 18 August: Bob Gilbert is bringing us another Lake Macquarie, as popular for its Tea and Damper as for the rogaining itself!  This year we return to the regular weekend - no City to Surf clash.
  • The Spring event on 6-7 October: Amazingly, Michael Watts is ready to do it all again, and is lining up our Spring event.  We can rely on Michael for an event to please all comers, from the leisurely walkers to the lycra-clad.
  • The Socialgaine on 18 November: Martin Dearnley is set to introduce us to the pleasures of the Hawksbury region in what looks like an excellent area for rogaining, and perhaps spend the weekend there too.

Put the dates in your diary/calendar/phone or however you do it now!

Online Forum

We now have an online forum where every rogainer is invited to contribute to discussions after each event. Please visit and share your experiences with us all!

Volunteering

Finally, Rogaining is a volunteer-run sport.   So if you have been enjoying the sport, think about helping out at an upcoming event.

Visit the volunteer page and/or contact our volunteer co-coordinator Ian Dempsey  ( volunteer@nswrogaining.org )  to find something that suits you.   Volunteers who make a major contribution to an event are rewarded by free entry (!) to a NSWRA organised Rogaine, or a contribution to a recognised training course (such as first aid or event management training).
