“Pagoda Palooza” Autumn Rogaine – Entries Close Monday 29th April!

By the time this letter reaches you, the ambitious course setters Andrew Smith and Toni Bachvarova will have just finished their final lot of flag hanging, all ready for next week, whilst Richard Sage is working hard to finalise a few other administrative items to ensure the event runs as smoothly as possible.

Of course, the highlight feature of the event are the vast arrays of rock pagodas that decorate the area, and will slay the conventional navigational wisdom of following the ridges and spurs and instead working out ways around these impressive natural sculptures. However, there is plenty else on offer here, with nice open gullies, great lookouts, and a variety of vegetation types. Casual entrants will benefit from a generous plethora of CPs on obvious features, though highly competitive teams will be faced with many challenging route planning and navigational dilemmas, so suffice to say, there’s something there for everyone!

Having spent last weekend out vetting the course, I can say first hand that the area is superb. It’s also our first true, off-track, bush rogaine since the NSW Champs almost nine months ago, so if you don’t have your entry in, don’t miss out!

We would love to have a few more helpers on the day with marshalling, helping novices, and setup, please contact coordinator Richard Sage on sagerichard904@gmail.com if you think you can lend a hand. We’d also greatly appreciate additional hands to collect flags on the Sunday, and in the following couple of weeks, which is a great way to have free navigation practice on the (hopefully few) CPs you stuffed up(!) and see parts of the course you haven’t been to.

ACT and Australian Intervarsity Championships, 18-19 May 2019

This year's 8 and 24 hour event doubles as the 50th anniversary UniSport (Intervarsity) Rogaine. We will be returning to Bournda on far south NSW's stunning Sapphire Coast for the first time since 2014, and this time we will also be accessing the Nature Reserve, which those with long memories may recall was last used at an ACTRA event in 2006. Recent rains have made this jewelled area all the more splendid, especially in the patches of rainforest micro-climate.

University students are eligible for a travel/entry subsidy. Please contact Trevor Gollan (president@nswrogaining.org) if you'd like to participate and receive financial assistance to get there. There's one major rule: your team must all be current students at the same university, and preference will be given to undergraduates. We are very keen for uni students to represent NSW at the Intervarsity Champs, so please consider how you can participate.

Paddy Pallin 6-Hour, “Will I or Wollemi”, 16th June, Colo River

This year's Paddy Pallin rogaine will be based around the Upper Colo, described by event coordinator Ian Almond as having a “pristine river, spectacular views, a world heritage national park, history, wildlife and free camping await you. There may even be a hot shower.”

It’s an area fondly remembered by those who competed there in 2004. Watch the event website here for more information.

Coming Events

There are plenty of other activities to look forward to in the next few months, which will have more details released in the next newsletter in a couple of weeks, but some key dates for the diary (or Outlook calendar?) as we ease into winter are:

As always, if you think you can help out before, during or after any of our events, please get in touch with our volunteer coordinator, Graham Field (volunteer@nswrogaining.org) and the relevant event coordinator (if any).
