Wingello Wingaine 6/12h – Results, Map, Splits and Photos now Online!

The weather was cool, wet and windy which some may say was perfect for a day and night beating around the bush. 300+ competitors explored the huge variety of the pine plantation, open woodland and beautiful (if wet) rainforest along Nyes Creek.

Careful navigation and perseverance were required for even the lowest checkpoints – no points could be taken for granted. However, those who went the extra mile were rewarded. In particular, a special mention goes to 12hr winners Craig Cowan and Lee Rice who bagged an impressive 1520 points. 6hr winners Thomas Brazier and Ben Armitage (pictured, below) collected a remarkable 1290 points, more than all but 4 of the 12hr teams!

Competitors file towards CP 22 like a trail of ants going to a lump of sugar.

Last Wednesday a select bunch of participants and helpers got together at the Dove and Olive Pub to compare notes on routes, course setting, navigation and some nice craft beers.

Our webmaster, Chris, has once again written a great report about his experiences, which you can access on the forum here... What did you think of the event? Feel free to create your own forum post to talk about what you enjoyed, loathed and will remember about the Wingello Wingaine, and whether you think the post-rogaine catch-up should be a regular feature of our events.

Thanks are due to Mike Hotchkis and his team of helpers for putting on the event. Also, a special thank-you to Carley Finn and Jim Collier, who gave up their course to help an injured participant. They set a fine example of the true spirit of rogaining!

Paddy Pallin 6hr – Sunday 17th June – Entries Open Now, Here...

The Paddy Pallin 6-hour Rogaine will explore the surrounds and history of Kitchener, a small mining village 5km south of Cessnock (in the Newcastle area). Starting from Poppethead Park, the area includes some of Werakata National Park and Conservation Areas. Suitable for beginners through to experienced rogainers, there is an extensive track network. There are hints of mining history across the map and some impressive ruins of the old chimney and winding house from the Aberdare South Colliery.

The rogaine will start at 9:30am and finish at 3:30pm with tasty food afterwards by the Waitara Scouts. Camping will be available on Saturday night at Kitchener Public School (2 blocks from the start location at Poppethead Park) for a $5 donation per campsite which will go to the school.

Welcome John Clancy as Secretary

The NSWRA Committee is very thankful for John Clancy’s offer to step in and fill the vacancy of the Secretary Role, who has already hit the ground running in preparing for the upcoming committee meeting and signed up for a NSW Sport & Recreation Governance Forum. Please thank John for his willingness to step up to this essential role.

Although we “formally” elected the committee at the AGM following the recent Minigaine, we welcome members at any time of year. If you are interested in joining, please do not hesitate to contact Gill at vicepresident@nswrogaining.org.

Call for

Our sport relies on volunteers to run and keep bringing you great rogaines. Volunteering to help run a rogaine is the next best thing to rogaining itself (or arguably better, given that the latter can only be done with the former)! – it’s personally rewarding and a great way to meet fellow rogainers and pool your collective skills. Volunteers for key roles are rewarded with free entry to future events.

There are plenty of opportunities (i.e. vacancies) to help at events this year. Check out the online volunteer register on the website to find one and sign up! You won’t regret it.

If you need more information about volunteering, drop an email to the Volunteer Coordinator, Graham Field.<
