Socialgaine 6 Hour : 20 November 2011

"Snakes and Ladders, Swings and Roundabouts"

This year the Socialgaine was held in the leafy suburbs of the Frenchs Forest area and in the Garigal National Park in northern Sydney.  Lots of bush trails were explored and picturesque water views dotted the course. The wildflowers were out and the summer heat was ferocious too. There were also a few puzzled rogainers trying to count doors on a car wreck in one of the shady creeks.

Congratulations to the Open Winners, Richard Green and Ben Streckeisen and Legend Winners, Eric Smith and Phillip Titterton. Many thanks to Neil Hawthorne and Warwick Selby for organising and setting a great event!

Forum

We now have an online forum where every rogainer is invited to contribute to discussions about rogaining in NSW. Please visit the forum and share your thoughts and experiences with us all!

Missing Trophies

Do you have a NSW Rogaining Championship trophy that has been sitting prominently in your pool room for a few years?  The following three trophies have gone missing.  If you know where they are, please give Mark Von Huben a call on (02) 9425 5210 (business hours) or email on mvonhuben@cochlear.com.

2012 Australian Rogaining Championships

It’s not too early to start preparing for this event to be held in the Parachilna Gorge area of the Flinders Ranges, South Australia, on 5 & 6 May 2012. Why not make it part of a holiday in the Flinders.

At this stage, there is plenty of accommodation available, from tent sites to shearers’ quarters and hotels. There will be a “Bus & Bunk” option for those who do not want to drive there.

As well as the traditional 24 hour event, a roving 12 hours within 22 will be offered.

2012 NSWRA Events

Our calendar for 2012 is taking shape - find the latest in the online Events Calendar.  Fixtures so far include:

The Metrogaine on 12 February: Richard Green - who's brought us several memorable Metrogaines in recent years - is at it again, this time in the parks and bays of the inner west.

The Minigaine on 18 March: back by popular demand, and slowly becoming a regular feature on our calendar.  Ted Woodley, who brought us the 2011 Minigaine, is currently planning the 2012 event, back on Sydney's North Shore.  We're hoping for a little less rain this year!

The Autumn event (date TBC): Two of our most prolific competitors, Richard Sage and Nihal Danis, are turning their hands to course-setting and planning to bring us an upside down rogaine for this year's autumn event.  Not sure what an upside down rogaine is?  You'll have to wait and find out!

The Paddy Pallin on 17 June: Rob Vincent has already been hard at work in the field to bring us a great Paddy Pallin rogaine in 2012.  We'll be heading west of Sydney for open eucalypt forest with impressive sandstone features, but we won't say any more just yet...

The Lake Maquarie on 18 August: Bob Gilbert is bringing us another Lake Macquarie, as popular for its Tea and Damper as for the rogaining itself!  This year we return to the regular weekend - no City to Surf clash.

The Spring event on 6-7 October: Amazingly, Michael Watts is ready to do it all again, and is lining up our Spring event.  We can rely on Michael for an event to please all comers, from the leisurely walkers to the lycra-clad.

The Socialgaine on 18 November: Insert your event here!  The only event left in 2012 without a co-ordinator, here is your chance!  The socialgaine is always a good event to start with, even if you've never helped organise one before.  Seek some inspiration at this year's socialgaine in a few week's time.
Put the dates in your diary/calendar/phone or however you do it now!

Volunteering

Finally, Rogaining is a volunteer-run sport.   So if you have been enjoying the sport, think about helping out at an upcoming event.

Visit the volunteer page and/or contact our volunteer co-coordinator Ian Dempsey  ( volunteer@nswrogaining.org )  to find something that suits you.   Volunteers who make a major contribution to an event are rewarded by free entry (!) to a NSWRA organised Rogaine, or a contribution to a recognised training course (such as first aid or event management training).
