Autumngaine

Calling all adventure seekers

The great north coast Autumngaine is on over the ANZAC Day long weekend. Located at Bucca in the Coffs Harbour hinterland, the area is reached equally easily by freeway from both Sydney and Brisbane, so this will be a State of Origin battle between the QLD maroons and the NSW blues!

Held on the Saturday in the middle of the long weekend, the Friday public holiday would be the perfect day for relaxed travelling since the action doesn't begin until 11am the next day.

The setters, Keelan Birch and Mark Hurry are keen to point out that a rogaine has never been held here before so it should be a brand new adventure.

Key event information:

  • Entries close:        11:59pm Monday 21st April
  • Full entry:               $70
  • Concession entry: $50, and child under 14 free
  • Start:                       11:00am Saturday 26th (both 6 & 12-hour)

Camping will be available on a large grassy oval over the Friday and Saturday nights, with toilets nearby, and only 5 minutes walk from the start. The area is only 30mins to hotels in Coffs Harbour, and shops including supermarkets are only 15mins away at Moonee Beach.

Post-event catering will be provided by local scouts, with build-your-own-burgers, soups, and other goodies.

A team finder service plus info for novices is available on the entries page.

Course highlights

Highlights include lovely rainforest lined creek lines, waterfalls, old mining relics, and lookouts. The forest contains a mix of dry blackbutt, tallowood, flooded gum, and brush box. We are advised that the rainforest creek lines are really beautiful and generally the best to travel on.

47 off-track controls have already been hung and there will be an all-night cafe set up at a lookout approximately halfway through the course.

To get the most up to date info, including the Final Instructions when they are posted, visit the Autumngaine page on the website.

Student travel bursaries for the Intervarsity Champs

Intervarsity rogainers

This year, the 2025 Australian Intervarsity Rogaining Championships will be held in September in conjunction with the NSW State Rogaining Championships at Mt Werong.

Bursaries to cover the travel costs of one university team per state or territory are available from the Nigel Aylott Memorial Sports Foundation (NAMSF).

To receive a bursary, a team of up to 5 must all be enrolled at the same university.

Interested NSW applicants should email the NSWRA at info@nswroganing.org as soon as possible. Selection will be based on rogaining experience and standing, with preference given to undergraduate full-time students.

Who was Nigel Aylott?

Nigel Aylott showed early talent as a long-distance runner. He got into rogaining through Monash University Bushwalking Club. As his endurance and navigation developed, so did his success. He won the World Rogaining Championships in 1998 and the Australian Rogaining Championships in 2000 and 2001.

Nigel was killed in the 2004 Primal Quest race in Washington State after being hit by a large boulder dislodged at the top of a gully.

He was highly regarded and friends encouraged his family to set up the NAMSF to support the sports Nigel loved and gave so much to.

For more info, visit the Intervarsity home page on the Australian Rogaining Association website.

Do you have any good ideas for the newsletter?

Hand holding a quill

We'd love to hear from you. Do you have any: event reports or photos, recent experiences, personal reflections, or any semi-credible accounts of endurance & navigation to share?

Drop an email to: newsletter@nswrogaining.org — we’d be thrilled to feature your contribution in a future issue.

Volunteer opportunities -- more caterers needed

Volunteers

A call for caterers - multiple opportunities

Ever wanted to decide the menu at a rogaine? We are still looking for people who would like to try their hand at the catering for a number of the events this year. The level of commitment can range from leading the menu selection and procurement to just helping on the day. Give it a go. It's a lot of fun, you won't be on your own (it's a highly social role!), and there'll be plenty of mentoring available.

Of course, there are also lots of other opportunities to help with delivering our events this year too.

Please drop an email to Robin - volunteer@nswrogaining.org or register to help in any event here.

(NSWRA celebrates its volunteers. Support our events and earn free entry! Volunteers earn points. 100 points earns entry to a subsequent event. There is a volunteer rewards points table where you can monitor your progress toward a free entry voucher. For more info see the Volunteer Rewards Policy.)
