eNewsA quick overview on what's been happening and what's up next for Rogaining in NSW. Our next event - NSW Festival of Rogaining
The NSW Festival of Rogaining will be held on 21-22 September 2024 in Capertee National Park. There is a 6-hour, 15-in-24-hour Roving and a 24-hour rogaine on offer. This area provides some of the best rogaining country in NSW with gorgeous open eucalyptus forest. It's renowned for some of the best birdwatching in NSW and it's home to native Australian wildlife like kangaroos, wallaroos, wallabies and gliders. We interviewed our course setters on why you should join us at this festival! Q: What's your favourite part of the course? Toni: This is not easy to answer as I've had a great time at many places on the course. The stretch of Capertee River on the Eastern side of the course is absolutely lovely! Smiffy: The northern slopes of Mount Airly in the southern part of the course. The eucalypt forest, the open understory and the views are just outstanding. Q: Why else should rogainers sign up? Toni: The navigation is really fun, there are gentle options for people who enjoy taking it easy, and because of the abundant wildlife - participants will have a real chance to see many interesting animals. Are you ready to try a 24-hour rogaine?NSW Rogaining only puts on one 24-hour rogaine per year. This makes the 24-hour event at our Festival of Rogaining the NSW Championship event. Check out some of the trophies on offer... but you gotta be in it to win it!
Read this blog post where we interview some of our regular 24-hour participants and get them to tell us why you should give a 24-hour rogaine a go! A quote from each team is shown below to whet your appetite.
Are you still not convinced? Then why not try the 15-in-24hr-Roving event this year and consider the 24-hour rogaine next year 😀 Recent Events WrapEastwood and Westward Rogaine is now on MapRunIf you enjoyed Steve Ryan's night-time romp around the suburbs and would like to have another crack at it to better your score, the 5-hr Nightgaine course is now available on MapRun. 33rd Lake Macquarie RogaineSaturday 24th August saw another highly successful Lake Macquarie Rogaine. Located at Mandalong, it straddled the Olney State Forest and Watagans National Park. The morning began ominously, with a loud thunderclap sending one anxious participant scurrying for the BOM site -- seeking guidance about rain gear! But after that spooky start, the weather matured, and it was a perfect goldilocks day. The overall winners were Darren Smith & Brett Stevens with 1800 points for the 6-hour, and Ivan Koudashev & Andrew Brown with 3210 points for the 12-hour. The 12-hour winners cleaned up the entire course with 3 hours to spare. The full results can be found here. The course was set and vetted by the venerable 'Newcastle Team' of Bert van Netten, Bob & Pam Montogmery, Peter Tarjanyi, Anita Bickle, and Tim Doman. It featured the best the Watagans had to offer, including enticing views of the coastal plain, tall open eucalypt forest of blue and spotted gums, stands of tallow wood, turpentine, and ironbark, along with beautiful rocky gullies characterised by moss-covered walls and boulders. The orchids were spectacular too. For decades the Lake Mac rogaines have always had a lot to offer, and the all-day refreshments to be found at the unique 'Tea & Damper' cafe out in the bush were a very popular innovation, especially with families. We hope to see you again next year! Photos by Bruce Sutton - see the website for many more. 2024 CalendarWe're getting to the sharp end of the rogaining year with just 2 NSW events remaining. Lock these into your calendar so that you don't miss out on any of the 30 hours of on-course action. Please note that the Surprise Rogaine (previously scheduled for 26th October) has been cancelled this year. A lot of prep work had already gone into this event, so it won't be wasted and the event will return as one of our 6-hour events in 2025. The 2025 calendar of events will be published soon.
