Welcome to 2019, Rogaine Style!
Happy New Year to our regular rogaine enthusiasts! We hope that it is a year full of thrills, new experiences and triumphs both in and out of doors. As our readers are most likely in the stage of planning out their year, we hope that you are able to mark the following dates in your diary to get excited about:
- 3hr Minigaine - Sunday 24th February (Western Sydney Parklands)
- 6/4hr Metrogaine - Sunday 24th March (Springwood)
- 12/6hr Autumngaine - Saturday 4th May (Cullen Bullen, near Lithgow)
- 6hr Paddy Pallin – Sunday 16th June (TBA)
- 12/6hr Lake Macquarie: Saturday 10th August (Lake Macquarie Region)
- 24/8hr NSW Championships: 14th-15th September (TBA – Coordinator Needed!)
- 3hr Paddlegaine: Sunday 3rd November (Lake Macquarie Area)
- 6hr Socialgaine: Sunday 24th November (Northern Beaches)
This year, the Australian Rogaining Association encourages all rogainers to consider travelling interstate for an event or two, especially to support the 24hr State Championship events. The classic 24hr rogaine is a very special event and travelling interstate for a rogaine is a great way to see more of our beautiful country. Remember, although these are all “championship” events, everyone is welcome, and can spend as much or as little time on course as they like! In addition to the NSW Champs, here are the dates for this year's 24hr events:
- ACT Champs and SA Champs - 18th-19th May
- WA Winter 24hr – 15th-16th June
- World Champs in Spain – 27th-28th July
- WA Champs – 10th-11th August
- Qld Champs – 24th-25th August
- Vic 24hr Champs – 12th-13th October
- Australasian Champs in Tas – 9th-10th November
- NZ Champs – 23rd-24th November
Minigaine 3hr – Sunday 24th February – Entries Now Open Here!
The Minigaine, which will this year be held in the Western Sydney Parklands, is unique being the one event that both team and individual entries are permitted, giving participants the option of taking it easy with friends/family or testing their planning and stamina by running or walking alone.
The Western Sydney Parklands are located about 45kms West of Sydney, encompassing Blacktown, Abbotsbury, Fairfield and Prospect. Covering over 5000 hectares, it is the largest urban parkland system in Australia.
The start location will be at Lizard Log, off Cowpasture Road, within the Parklands. Gates open at 7:00am. There will be a mass start at 9:00am with a finish at 12:00pm, followed by presentations and light refreshments.
The course, set by Lisa Gyecsek, will feature a fairly equal mix of parkland and urban areas including grassy fields, woodlands, parklands and lookouts. It includes pram friendly routes, cafes and kids’ playgrounds with flying foxes, climbing towers and water play. Furry four legged kids are also welcome (on a leash), so bring the whole family for a super fun day out!
AGM 2019 – Sunday 24th February
Please note we will conduct our AGM immediately after the Minigaine presentations.
Anyone is welcome to attend the AGM and we welcome committee nominations for the following year. It's important to have diversity on the committee, to duly represent our different types of rogainers, not just the gung-ho competitors.
If you have issues for discussion or would like to help in the committee please contact Trevor Gollan (president@nswrogaining.org) before 24th Feb.
Call to Volunteers
In 2018, 102 people volunteered at NSW Rogaining events, many of them at multiple events. Rogaines would not have happened without their help, so we thank for their time.
But looking forward to this year, we need volunteers of all varieties to get events off the ground. Aside from NSW Champs in September, we have event coordinators and setters for all events, but will need help with vetting, flag hanging and collecting, marshalling, towing the trailer and setup at all events. Remember, some of these roles require minimal rogaining experience, so there will be certainly be a way anyone can help out.
Do you have a First Aid qualification and would like to put it to good use at a rogaine? In events where we don’t have a dedicated search and rescue team, we need to have someone on hand who can administer basic first aid, so we’re setting up a Register of Qualified First Aiders in our organisation. Remember that you can claim up to $100 for attending a recognised training course as an alternative to a free entry (when you earn one!).
If you can offer your assistance with any of these things, please get in touch with our volunteer coordinator, Graham Field (volunteer@nswrogaining.org)
