LaneCoveRivergaine ed. 3 - Results now available

The final instalment of the LaneCoveRivergaine series by Ted Woodley has been done and dusted with 129 teams leaving Blackman Oval, Lane Cove last Saturday morning. The rain fortunately held off though the mild precipitation kept temperatures down making it a welcome contrast to the horrendous temperatures enveloping Sydney in the past few weeks.

Ted’s determination to set a course that couldn’t be cleared was beaten by the strength of two teams’ superhuman efforts who collected the entire allotment of 3310 points (and 50+km!) with substantial time to spare. Well done to Gill & Jeremy Fowler who did so in 5:31:42 and Andrew Hill and Richard Mountstephens in 5:39:01.

No time to sit down – you’re in a competition!

Father and daughter team Andrew & Rochelle are in fine form with a 3rd in mixed and 6th overall

To ensure that we continue to provide accessible, high-quality events, NSWRA has constructed a short survey of questions for competitors in the event, and we’d love you to take a few minutes to answer them!

Take the survey here...

Minigaine 2017 – Sun 9th April – Entries now open here...

A NSWRA feature of recent years is the 3 hour Minigaine, which can either be seen as a super-compressed rogaine, or a super-extended Sydney Summer Series orienteering event, depending on whether you choose to enter alone or in a team. Steve Ryan has raised his hand to set the course, which will explore the beaches, dunes, coastal paths and streets Cronulla.

Like other NSWRA events, this event has always drawn crowds of all descriptions, with elite athletes running 30+km to families seizing the chance to get a flavour of the sport without needing to be out too long. We would love you save the date!

NSWRA AGM 2017 – Sun 9th April

The Annual General Meeting will be held at the end of the Minigaine, we will acknowledge the committee and volunteers of 2016 and elect our 2017 committee. If you would like to be a part of the direction of the sport’s future, this is your chance to nominate yourself for one of the committee roles or to serve as a general member. For more information please contact Gill.

In the spirit of rogaining efficiency, the meeting will be kept brief and is only likely to last a maximum of 15 mins, so please join us to celebrate our association and volunteers.

Australian Champs 2017 – Sat-Sun 6/7th May Entries are now open

ACTRA is hosting this year’s Australian Rogaining Championships (not to be confused with the recent Australasian Champs in NZ), located between Canberra and Cooma.

The course has already been set by the very experienced team of Ron Simpson and Jeannie Douglass who have set a number of recent ACT championship courses and won mixed super veteran titles at World and Australian championships. There will be excellent navigational challenges in open eucalypt forest. You might even spot a koala on the course!

RouteGadget

The Committee has been discussing the best way to display routes post event and we have settled on RouteGadget as the best way to do this. RouteGadget would already be well known to many in the Orienteering community.

The beauty of RouteGadget that you can "play" your route sped up. You can also play your route and your favourite competitor's at the same time and either laugh at their mistakes or be in awe of their brilliance.

For those of who who wear a GPS device (but do not consult it during the event), you can upload your GPS track (GPX or TCX) and compare it against others. I try and compare my speed, error count and route choice against those teams who are just a little bit better. This can be very insightful. There is a lot to learn from the teams who just beat you. You can also watch, with awe, how the really good teams gobble up the course and take comfort at the small mistakes they make during the event.

Uploading a GPX track is pretty intuitive and there is a link to a "how to" video on the event page. For those of you who, like me, are too impatient to watch even a short video, be aware once uploaded you need to drag your GPX track over the correct path on the map, anchor one corner by clicking on it and then stretch another corner until everything lines up then save it.

RouteGadget has been loaded with the routes for the LaneCoveRivergaine3 and you can access it via the event page here...

Call for Volunteers

A great thank you to all the people who assisted at the recent Metrogaine, and have put up their hand to help at the Minigaine, meaning that most bases are now covered. However, we still need more people for the remaining 5 events this year.

Volunteering is a great way to ensure the continual running of quality NSWRA events. If you think you can spare a few hours before, during or after an event please see the volunteers calendar and if you’d like to put your hand up, or know more about roles, please get in touch with Graham.
