About:

This year’s Paddy Pallin rogaine marks a major milestone. It’s the event’s 60th anniversary– a Diamond Jubilee.

We aim to honour this milestone with some good camping and a hot meal. 1st North Sydney Scouts will provide an optional fancy dinner ($20) for the night before. Brekkie and post-event meal at included in your fee. Some surprise activities and guests are in the works as well. Not a night to be missed.

The event will start at 9:00am with maps available from 7:00am.

In contrast to your typical NSW rogaine location, we’ve forgone the dramatic topography of sandstone cliffs and ferny gullies, to a decidedly more gentle course. Expect open forest and undulating wetlands. The socially-distanced contours should mean our elite teams will aim to cover lots of ground, but those who’ve come to rely on a certain style of navigation may find an unfamiliar challenge in the subtleties of the features. For our newcomers and families, the friendly off track walking and mountain biking trails near the hash house will be an excellent classroom for refining your compass skills.

Thoughts from Vetting:

EVERYONE GET OFF THE LOUNGE AND GO TO THE 6HR PADDY PALLIN EVENT AT CURRAMBENE ON SUNDAY, 18 JUNE 2023.
Why?

  • It is really enjoyable country for bush navigation
  • The country is very flat by rogaining standards and the map is on 5m contours which is a first for NSW rogaining
  • It is a great course for newbies to learn navigation and while they are probably going to miss a control or two, there are lots of catching features such as fire trails and mountain bike trails, so you can quickly find out where you are and have another go.
  • It is a course that will really test the good rogainers. We will find out which of the elite teams can actually navigate
  • The country is pretty to walk through and while there is a little bit of fight scrub the setter’s notes will tell you how to avoid this, assuming you are not trying to clear the course.
  • Free camping is available before and after the event. Most of the map is around 50m elevation and is close to the coast, so it will be a lot warmer than camping in the mountains in mid-winter.
  • It’s an area we have never been to before, it might be another 60 years before we get back there.
  • Lots of accommodation options in nearby Nowra or Callala Bay
